The Lisbon Heritage Hotels have joined the National Museum of Contemporary Art – Chiado (MNAC) in supporting the temporary exhibition dedicated to Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.
This partnership stems from the historical connection between Amadeo and the building where the Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel now stands. During his stay in Lisbon for his 1916 exhibition at the Lisbon Naval League, he lodged on the third floor of No. 9, Largo da Anunciada.
On the façade of the Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel, a display has been installed to promote the exhibition of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso at the MNAC, which runs in Chiado until 26 February.
Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso was born on 14 November 1887 in Manhufe, in the municipality of Amarante, and his work forms part of the first modernist generation of Portuguese painters.
In December 1916, Amadeo exhibited his work in what would be the final exhibition of his lifetime. The venue chosen was the Lisbon Naval League, where 84 oil and wax paintings, 19 watercolours and 11 drawings were displayed.
One hundred years after the “Abstractionism Painting Exhibition” at the Lisbon Naval League, the MNAC now invites visitors to rediscover his work, which at the time marked a significant milestone in the affirmation of the modernist avant-garde in Portugal.
Lisbon Heritage Hotels brings together charming retreats located in the historic centre of Lisbon, housed in former residences and historic buildings. They are owned by Portuguese families who joined forces to create intimate settings, carefully designed to highlight the connection to the city of Lisbon, its heritage and its culture.
The Lisbon Heritage Hotels collection comprises four properties: As Janelas Verdes, Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel, Hotel Lisboa Plaza and Solar do Castelo.
