Since opening in 1954, it has remained in the hands of the same family, who have ensured that it retains its traditional character. Old prints depicting Lisbon life line the staircase, vintage telephone kiosks have been charmingly preserved, and friendly, attentive staff create an atmosphere of easy informality. Behind Reception stands an eye-catching, glittering gold Namban screen depicting the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan in 1543. The original is housed at Lisbon’s National Museum of Ancient Art, with which Heritage Hotels enjoy a special partnership.

The 94 rooms are decorated in a traditional Portuguese style, featuring wooden parquet flooring and a soft colour palette that creates a cosy, welcoming feel. This includes 12 suites, all equipped with air-conditioning, a complimentary safe, satellite TV, LCD TV and free access to broadband wireless. Bathrooms include Ach Brito amenities, a hairdryer and bath robes.
While a buffet breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant, Café Plaza offers a wide selection of salads and sandwiches, as well as traditional dishes such as fillets of John Dory, cod cakes with tomato rice, and Bife à Portuguesa (sirloin steak with ham) throughout the day.
